Cipriano de Rore (1515/16-1565): Infelix ego (6vv)

We have added another work to our On Josquin series. This is an astonishing hommage to Josquin, the large-scale six-voice motet Infelix ego by Rore. It constantly repeats the ostinato Miserere mei Deus in the second Altus.

Fernando de las Infantas (1534-c. 1610): The Complete Motets. Motets for 6vv, 7vv and 8vv

We are glad to announce the first worldwide edition of the motets by the Spanish composer Fernando de las Infantas (1534-c. 1610). A noblesman born in Córdoba in 1534, Infantas was a theologist and a musician who lived in Rome since 1571 or 1572.

Infantas published three books of motets in Venice under the title Sacrarum varii styli cantionum. The first book (1578) contains 37 motets for four voices, the second (1578) has 30 motets for five voices, and the third (1579) has 21 motets from six to eight voices, making a total of 88 motets.

Infantas' motets are a fascinating mixture of the complexities of the Venetian composers like Zarlino and Willaert, and the expresiveness of the Spanish Renaissance composers like Victoria and Guerrero.

The third part of Fernando de las Infantas' motets (1579) for six, seven and eight voices includes canons, chromaticism, ostinatos and even conflicting key signatures. They are without a doubt the pinnacle (and the last) of Infantas' motets.
