Noel Bauldeweyn: Sancta Maria

Sancta Maria is a motet scored for six voices (SATTBB) by Noel Bauldeweyn (fl. 1509-1513) in E-Bc M1967 or Cançoner de Gandía.

There is a constant, canonic imitation between two trios of voices (STB and ATB) that could be linked with other contemporary or later Marian motets containing strict canons, specially the also six-voiced motet Ave sanctissima Maria by Pierre de la Rue. This could imply a symbolic meaning as the circle has been traditionally linked to the Virgin Mary (see "Circulatio" tradition: Maria lactans and Josquin as musical orator by Warren Kinkerdale in Acta Musicologica, vol. 56, Fasc. 1 (1984), pp. 69-92).

Sancta Maria, virgo virginum,
mater et filia Regis regnum omnium
tuum nobis impende solatium:
ut caelestis regni
per te mereamur habere praemium
et cum electis Dei
regnare in perpetuum.
Sancta Maria, piarum piissima,
intercede pro nobis,
sanctarum sanctissima:
ut per te virgo gloriosa
nostra sumat peccamina
qui pro nobis ex te natus
regnat super ethera ut sua caritate
nostra deleantur peccamina.

Secunda pars

Sancta Dei genitrix,
quae dignae meruisti concipere,
quem totus orbis
nequivit comprehendere
tuo pio,
interventu culpas nostras ablue,
ut perennis sedem gloriae,
per te redempti valeamus scandere
ubi regnas cum Filio tuo sine tempore.
Tu autem Domine, miserere nostri.
