Alonso de Tejeda: O, Domine Jesu Christe

O, Domine Jesu Christe (SSAATB) is the sixth motet of Liber tertius sacrarum cantionum by Alonso de Tejeda (c. 1540-1628). Due to its style, it could be one of the earliest motets of this collection. Many English Cadences appear in this work:

The text, the presence of many dissonances and the mode make this striking work a dramatic one, where sorrow for the pain and death of Christ is the main theme.

The text is taken from the Septem precationes Sancti Gregorii de passione Domini. Many Renaissance composers used this text: Josquin (first five strophes), Victoria (second and third strophes) and Guerrero (second strophe). Tejeda employs only the fifth strophe with a slight change to the original text (nobilissima instead of sanctissima):

O, Domine Jesu Christe, propter illam amaritudinem,
quam pro me miserimo peccatore
sustinuisti in cruce, maxime in illa hora,
quando nobilissima anima tua egressa est de corpore tuo,
deprecor te, miserere animae meae in egresu suo.
